Biggest domes and roofs
In 1434, the Duomo Cathedral in Florence, Italy, had the largest dome in the world. It measured 45.5m across and was still the world’s largest dome 400 years later. The diameter of the Millennium Dome is almost 8 times greater, thanks to modern building techniques and materials. Some of the domes in the list opposite are supported by struts and cables, others are freestanding. Some can even be opened, depending on the weather.
