Papillomavirus involved

According to a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, the human papillomavirus responsible for cervical cancer, could also be the cause of some throat cancers, whose incidence has increased considerably over the last thirty years . This study confirms a hypothesis already put forward by different researchers. The study shows that HPV 16, one strain of HPV is present in 72% of cancers of the throat. Contrary to what was previously thought, it could therefore be a risk factor more important than tobacco or alcohol in this type of cancer ... It must be said that these figures relate only to cancers of the oropharynx (part of the pharynx behind the mouth), which represent only 20% of cancers of the ENT (mouth, pharynx, larynx). For these other head and neck cancers, tobacco and alcohol remain the main risk factors.
